WINFIELD, W.Va. — Moving on … again.

For the third consecutive postseason, the Point Pleasant softball team needed three drama-filled games to get past Winfield as the Lady Knights captured the program’s 12th straight regional tournament appearance Wednesday night with an 8-5 win in the Class AA Region 4, Section 1 title game held at Jeff Wymer Field in Putnam County.

The second-seeded Lady Knights (23-7) entered Wednesday night’s contest as the winner’s bracket champions, which meant that the guests needed only one win over the Lady Generals (22-8) to advance to regional play. PPHS defeated Winfield on Monday night by a 3-1 count in the winner’s bracket final.

WHS, however, played lights out in the first game of the evening as the hosts scored at least one run in each of its first five innings at the plate en route to a 7-3 victory — which forced an all-decisive Game 3.

The Lady Knights never trailed in the finale as Tanner King belted a three-run homer as part of a four-run third, which ultimately gave the guests a permanent 5-1 cushion.

Winfield closed back to within 5-3 through three complete, but the game was never closer the rest of the way as Point tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames — leading to an 8-3 cushion.

The Lady Generals added two in their half of the seventh, but centerfielder Megan Hammond recorded the final out when she reached across her body to make a running catch as she headed for the left-centerfield fence.

The remarkable snag also allowed Point to extend its sectional title run for another year, dating back to the 2006 campaign.

Point Pleasant will be the host site for the opening round of Region 4 play and the game will likely take place on Monday. More details will be made available as the brackets take shape.

A complete recap of Wednesday night’s thrilling Region 4, Section 1 championship will be available in the Friday sports edition of the Point Pleasant Register.
