Blue Devils tennis avenges ‘Burg

CENTENARY, Ohio — This time, the Blue Devils were on the right end of a 3-2 score with Wheelersburg.

That’s because the Gallia Academy High School tennis team exacted a measure of revenge against the visiting Pirates on Wednesday, as the Blue Devils swept the three singles matches en route to a 3-2 triumph.

Earlier this season, Wheelersburg defeated the Blue Devils by a 3-2 count — giving Gallia Academy its first loss of the year.

The difference this time, though, was Wheelersburg’s Drew Jackson — a Division II state tournament qualifier —didn’t play on Wednesday with a sore elbow.

In the first meeting, the Pirates swept the two doubles tilts, while Jackson downed Gallia Academy’s Miguel Velasco at first singles.

In the return bout, the Blue Devils swept all three singles affairs —and actually pitched 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in each.

Wheelersburg won both doubles duals again, limiting GAHS to only five combined points in the process.

The Blue Devils raised their record to 9-3, as the 3-2 outcome was their eighth such match of the season.

Gallia Academy is 5-3 in those 3-2 counts —with losses to Wheelersburg, Ironton and Jackson.

The Blue Devils also own a pair of 4-1 wins, while also winning over Unioto and Portsmouth Notre Dame with 5-0 sweeps.

The formula for the Blue Devils’ success this season has been sweeping the three singles matches —with Velasco at first singles, Pierce Wilcoxon at second singles and Miles Cornwell at third singles.

The threesome did so again at those spots on Wednesday with straight-set shutouts.

It was Velasco over Mason Nolan, Wilcoxon over Hunter Pistole, and Cornwell over Tanner Preston.

At first doubles, Ben Allen and Nick Jones of the Pirates swept MiKayla Edelmann and Olivia Meadows 6-2, 6-2.

At second doubles, Carson McCorkle and Seth Pertust swept Thomas Hamilton and Kirsten Hesson 6-0, 6-1.

The Blue Devils hosted Logan on Thursday in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League match.
