Mason County teams fare well at Poca

POCA, W.Va. — A good day for the boys from Mason County.

The track and field teams from Point Pleasant, Wahama and Hannan combined for 28 top-six efforts on Monday night during the 2017 Darby/Hedrick Invitational held on the campus of Poca High School in Putnam County.

Nitro came away with the boys team title after posting a winning tally of 110 points, while Poca (103) and Buffalo (98.5) wrapped up the top three spots in the eight-team field.

The Black Knights placed fourth overall with 87.5 points, while the White Falcons finished fifth with 62 points and the Wildcats were eighth with 3.5 points.

A total of 17 events were held at the annual meet, with the exception of the pole vault. Mason County combined for four individual championships, with three of those going to PPHS and another to Wahama.

Point Pleasant received a pair of first place efforts from Luke Wilson in both the 1600m run (4:51.37) and 3200m run (10:48.0). Cason Payne won the 200m dash with a time of 23.94 seconds and also finished third in the 400m dash with a mark of 54 seconds even.

Keshawn Stover was third in the 200m dash (24.31), while Brady Adkins tied for third place in the high jump with a clearing leap of five feet even. Joseph Clark was also third in the shot put with a heave of 47 feet, 11 inches.

Rushawn Craig was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 17-9, while Kaydean Eta placed fifth in the 300m hurdles with a mark of 48.72 seconds. Jesse Gleason tied for fifth in the shot put (40-6) and also finished sixth in the discus (121-5).

PPHS also had four different relay teams earn top four efforts, with the 4x100m squad of Payne, Stover, Justin Brumfield and Jovonne Johnson earning second place with a time of 47.62 seconds. The 4x200m team of Payne, Stover, Johnson and Steven Trent also finished second with a mark of 1:38.99.

The 4x110m shuttle hurdles quartet of Trent, Eta, Jared Icenhower and Zach Rediger finished third with a time of 1:10.65, while Rediger, Issac Daniels, Ethan Scott and Wyatt Dean combined for fourth in the 4x800m relay with a mark of 10:42.0.

Overall, Point Pleasant had 15 top six efforts and 10 top three finishes.

Wahama, on the other hand, had 11 top six performances — including six efforts in the top three spots.

The 4x800m relay team of Travis Kearns, James McCormick, Jacob Lloyd and Isaiah Pauley scored the White Falcons’ lone title after posting a winning time of 9:24.67.

The 4x200m squad of Johnnie Board, Abram Pauley, Brady Bumgarner and Christian Thomas were third with a time of 1:43.83, while the 4x400m team of Kearns, Lloyd, Brodee Howard and Zachary Roush also finished third with a mark of 4:05.94.

WHS also had a fourth place effort in the 4x110m shuttle hurdles as the quartet of Howard, Board, Lloyd and Wyatt Edwards posted a mark of 1:11.74.

Bumgarner earned second place in the 200m dash (23.96), while Mason Hildreth was second in the 3200m run (10:52.0) and also placed fourth in the 800m run (2:19.73). Edwards was also third in the discus with a throw of 124 feet, 6 inches.

Kearns was fourth in the 1600m run (5:08.47), Howard was fourth in the 110m hurdles (17.33) and McCormick was also fifth in the 800m run with a mark of 2:20.79.

Hannan earned two top six efforts, with Josh McCoy leading the way with a fifth place finish in the 400m dash (56.52). Chandler Starkey also tied for fifth in the high jump with a cleared height of 4 feet, 10 inches.
