PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Host Shawnee State University parlayed strong play at the net into a straight sets 25-19, 25-15, 25-15 victory over the University of Rio Grande, Thursday night, in non-conference volleyball action at Waller Gymnasium.
The Bears improved to 7-3 with the victory.
Rio Grande slipped to 3-2 with the loss. Both setbacks have come at the hands of Shawnee State.
The RedStorm committed 21 attack errors and finished with an attack percentage of just .073, while the Bears had just nine errors in 103 total attacks and a .311 attack percentage for the match.
Brianna Wiget and Miranda Clark finished with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead Shawnee State, while Bonnie Huesing had 27 assists and Madison Smith had 26 digs.
Clark, who began her career at Rio Grande, added a match-best three blocks.
Sophomore Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) had eight blocks to lead the RedStorm in a losing cause, while junior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) had 23 assists and junior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) tallied 14 digs.
Rio Grande returns to action Friday evening when it hosts Bluefield (WV) State College for the 2015 home opener. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Tonight’s game is the season opener for the Lady Blues, a member of the NCAA Division II Eastern College Athletic Conference.
