Marauders win opener 8-0, over Southern

ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — Even though it’s the season opener, the Marauder defense was in mid-season form.

The Meigs baseball team started the season with a shut out victory, as the host Maroon and Gold claimed an 8-0 decision over non-conference guest Southern, on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both squads.

Meigs (1-0) — which held the Tornadoes (0-1) to just two hits in the contest — scored twice in the bottom of the opening frame, as Zach Helton singled home both Christian Mattox and Chase Whitlatch.

The Marauders added three more runs in the with two outs in the bottom of the second frame, as Mattox reached on an error and later stole home, and then Luke Musser singled home Whitlatch and Tyler Williams.

The Meigs lead grew to 6-0 in the home half of the fourth inning, when Mattox scored on a Musser sacrifice-fly.

Musser doubled home both Williams and Whitlatch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, putting the final touches on the Marauders’ 8-0 win.

Musser was the winning pitcher of record, tossing three three innings in relief, in which he allowed one hit, while striking out six of the 10 batters he faced.

Whitlatch pitched the first two frames for MHS, striking out four batters, hitting one and walking two. Mattox pitched the final two frames for the hosts, and he struck out one batter, hit one batter and allowed one hit.

Billy Harmon suffered the pitching loss for the Tornadoes, allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits and five walks. Logan Drummer finished the game on the mound for SHS, and he gave up three earned runs, on four hits and three walks. Drummer struck out two batters in the setback.

Musser led the MHS offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and five runs batted in. Mattox was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Helton went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Whitlatch added a single and three runs scored. Williams contributed two runs scored to the winning cause.

Garrett Wolfe and Logan Dunn both singled once for the Tornadoes.

Both teams committed one error in the contest.

Meigs continues non-league play, visiting Jackson on Monday and Waterford on Tuesday. Southern begins its Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division slate on Monday in Racine against South Gallia, and on Tuesday at Wahama.
