HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A late start, but a start nonetheless.

A concern over one or more Class AAA competitors having the Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1) caused an hour-long delay to the start of the 70th annual WVSSAC wrestling championships on Friday night at Big Sandy Superstore Arena, but those concerns were soon addressed — allowing the opening night of a three-day quest to begin.

Class AAA eventually had the 145-pound, 152-pound and 170-pound divisions postponed for the night, and possibly longer, but the Class AA-A field was full go in all 14 weight classes.

Both Point Pleasant and Wahama came away with different results on their opening night of Class AA-A competition as the Big Blacks went 6-5 in individual matches while the White Falcons dropped all four of their opening round bouts.

PPHS — which recorded three pinfalls in its six individual triumphs — sit third overall in the Class AA-A standings with 20 points, trailing only fellow Class AA programs Independence (39.5) and East Fairmont (23.5).

WHS is currently tied for 42nd overall with 14 other Class AA-A teams with zero points after one day of competition. The White Falcons are also tied with seven other Class A programs for 13th place.

Wirt County currently leads the Class A field with 14 points, followed by Greenbrier West with 10 points and Magnolia with 6.5 points.

The second and third sessions of the 2017 WVSSAC wrestling championships will be held Friday at Big Sandy Superstore Arena, with the championship and podium rounds coming on Saturday.

Full details of the first two rounds of the state wrestling tournament will be available in the Saturday sports edition of the Point Pleasant Register.
