BIDWELL, Ohio — For the River Valley Raiders, the math simply didn’t add up on Friday night.
That’s because the host Raiders were outscored alone by Athens’ Griffin Lutz, who poured in 34 points in the Bulldogs’ 69-30 Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division boys basketball victory.
The contest marked the season opener for Athens — and the TVC-Ohio opener for River Valley.
The Raiders, after a season-opening win at Eastern, have now lost back-to-back home tilts to Jackson and Athens.
Athens outscored River Valley 11-6 in the opening quarter, as the Raiders posted eight points apiece in each of the final three cantos.
However, the Bulldogs erupted in the middle two stanzas, scoring 20 in the second period and 27 more in the third frame.
As a result, Athens amounted a 31-14 halftime advantage — and an even wider 58-22 margin following the third.
Lutz led the way with 34 points, as Eli Chubb chipped in with 15 and Dalton Cozart with 11.
Logan Maxfield and Nick Lutz scored four points apiece for the Bulldogs, as Robert Dickelman managed two points and Justin Hines hit a free throw.
Tre Craycaft led the Raiders with eight points, followed by six from Ian Polcyn and five from Patrick Brown.
Jarrett McCarley and Dustin Barber added three points apiece, followed by two apiece from Jacob Dovenbarger and Jacob Campbell.
Rory Twyman, with a foul shot, rounded out the Raiders’ scoring.
