Loughry grateful for election results Dear Editor,
I am deeply honored to have been elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. My election would not have been possible without so many wonderful West Virginians who volunteered their time during this past year. So many were supportive, helpful, and kind from the very first day of this endeavor.
I have been touched by the personal letters, emails, and phone calls during and after the election from individuals who exp...
Consider giving to Mason County DHHR this season Dear Editor,
This time of the year is when you see so much about giving and helping. There are many different ways that people can give and help out those who are in need. I encourage everyone out there to do this, not only this time of the year but all year long.
There are many different ways to help/give from helping a local church when they do their hot meal program to getting a name off of an angel tree that are at local businesses. T...
Reader tired of Point Pleasant’s double standard Dear Editor,
On November 13, 2012, I attended the city council meeting here in Point Pleasant to address the issue of “the project” at 209 9th Street. I had taken the trouble to make visual presentations. I took photos of properties owned by the Historic Landmark Council members that are in bad disrepair. I also took pictures of projects done by these same members to their own properties that were similar to the work, now stopped, on 209 9t...
Congress must maintain existing tax provisions Dear Editor,
The American dream isn’t about working hard, investing wisely and spending sensibly in order to leave something for Uncle Sam. But farmers and other family business owners will be required to do just that unless Congress acts to maintain existing provisions of the federal estate tax.
When it’s time to meet our maker, what’s left behind should be for our kids, not the IRS. A Tax Foundation survey of more than 2,000 Americans r...
Reader: Why does doctor need to know if I’m armed? Dear Editor,
I went to the doctor today and was asked to fill out a new form. On one of the items you were supposed to circle all that applied about what was in your house. I was surprised to find “firearms” and “firearms (loaded/unloaded).”
What was that all about? I could understand it if I were in a psychiatrist’s office or I was suicidal. Could this be a sneaky way for the government to find out who has guns and if they are loaded?

Reader is unhappy with double standard regarding zoned properties Dear Editor,
Is anyone in town wondering about the pile of dirt in the lot across from Advance Auto?
So are the owners, who were stopped in mid-process of landscaping the yard. After purchasing the property in 2003, the city took the shrubs out that encircled the property from the sidewalk, which left big holes and mounds of dirt and roots.
It’s been really difficult to mow and pick up debris since then. The property was very uneven eve...
Reader disappointed with ‘no’ vote on beer sales Dear Editor,
This is for the people of Huntington Township. I cannot believe how ignorant some people can be. We had an issue up for a vote. Beer sales in Vinton. Now it seems that we are to stay a dry village. We will never progress as you don’t realize that for every sale made, Vinton Village would get revenue. Money! People will still drink beer in Vinton, but because you are ignorant, those who drink beer will go to Wilkesville or Galli...
Reader gets her absentee ballot Dear Editor,
Hello, On October 21st, I sent a Letter To The Editor expressing my dissatisfaction with the Point Pleasant Clerk’s office. They were giving me a difficult time with my request for an Absentee Ballot. Well, after a phone call from me, they did, in fact, send me my ballot. I am proud to say I did perform my civic duty and voted. I do thank the Clerk’s office for doing that.

An open letter to my Conservative friends In a week in which we should applaud the processes on which this country was founded regardless of the outcome of the election, we actually find ourselves a more fractured nation. Emotions have run high, not just due to the differences in our political beliefs but also because we had the “perfect storm” of divergent concerns all wrapped into one election: race, gender equality, sexual orientation, religion, money, power. Some or all of these ...
Resident unhappy with Charlie Wilson’ record Dear Editor,
There he goes again, Charlie Wilson is telling tall tales and outright lies. The Ohio Election Commission already said with probable cause that Wilson has lied about Bill Johnson’s record. Wilson even admitted to a newspaper that his ads were untrue!
In recent letters to the editor, Wilson and his supporters continue to lie about Bill Johnson’s record. Wilson’s claim that Johnson only recently moved here, well, that’s a slap ...
Reader is concerned about Medicare Dear Editor,
As the son of elderly parents, I am concerned about the future of Medicare, and I am disturbed about claims made by the Bill Johnson campaign. The truth is that he supports vouchers, and, Charlie Wilson does not. The facts are that Congressman Johnson voted twice for the Ryan Budget bill that would turn Medicare into a voucher system. Check the record. Facts are facts. Don’t be fooled by slick ads paid for by out-of-state intere...
It’s time again to ‘fall back’ … and refresh smoke detector batteries Dear Editor,
Sunday, November 4th is that time of year … time to change our clocks back one hour and change the batteries in our smoke detectors.
Having working smoke detectors cannot be stressed enough. Smoke detectors simply save lives. We have recently witnessed their live saving effects in our own community. The fire department recommends having at least one working smoke detector on each level of your home and one in each bedroom and...
Gallia treasurer outlines delinquent tax payment plans Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to inform landowners of their options for paying delinquent taxes. Landowners may have been misinformed regarding their options. This explanation will clarify any misleading information regarding how payments can be made.
Option 1: A five-pay plan which takes 2.5 years to become current, one-fifth of delinquent taxes plus current one-half year taxes.
Option 2: A 10-pay plan which takes five years to...
Reader endorses Obama for four more years Dear Editor,
What a dilemma! Do we vote for the party that created the disaster or vote for the party that failed to clean up the whole disaster in only four years? Or, put another way — do we vote for the party that outsourced to Afghan warlords the capture of Bin-Ladin, or vote for the party that actually killed Bin-Ladin using Navy Seals? Or — do we vote for the party that pulled troops from Afghanistan (the country that killed Americans...
Gallia County Treasurer: A sister’s request Dear Editor,
The general election is soon approaching, and many of us will be headed to the polls to place our votes. These votes will be on the national, state and local levels. It is my prayer that all vote, which makes our country, state and county better for all. It is also my wish that the voters not rely on so much slander and libel. This year it seems to be worse than most.
Maybe it is because I am so close to the election on the l...
