MEIGS COUNTY — The Meigs County Sheriff’s Office and Meigs County Prosecutor’s Office report that a homicide occurred Wednesday night at the Meigs Motel.

Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood stated that officials with his office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the Meigs County Coroner were on scene at the Meigs Motel, located just off Ohio 7 near Pomeroy.

The call came into the sheriff’s office around 12:15 a.m. on Thursday.

Reportedly, a 911 call was a report of a possible disturbance, however, when officers responded they found evidence of an altercation and a homicide.

Wallis R. Chafin, 57, of Meigs County, was found dead at the scene.

According to Wood, three suspects were arrested later this morning after they returned to the motel. They have been identified as Ryan A. Cozart, 32, of Racine, Ariel R. Smith, 22, of Portland, and Sara J. Craig, 33, of Portland.

Cozart is reportedly being charged with one count of murder as a result of the incident, while Smith and Craig are both facing charge of complicity to commit murder.

The three suspects are currently in custody for questioning as the investigation continues.

The victims body has been sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

At this time, investigators are not releasing details as to the cause of Chafin’s death.

The Daily Sentinel will provide updates as they are made available.
