MIDDLEPORT — The driver of a Meigs Local School bus which struck a utility pole on Powell Street in Middleport has been charged by Middleport Police with failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident.
Patrolman Shannon Smith reported that Yvonne Moore of Middleport was the driver of the bus which struck the pole with such force that it was split in three different places and was hanging by cables. Some power outages in the Powell Street area were reported. Smith said the Meigs Emergency Medical Service was notified of the accident and responded. The accident occurred about 10 a.m. Thursday. There were no children on the bus.
It was reported Moore left the accident site in the bus and continued to the Meigs Elementary School where she picked up students, and took them to the Pomeroy parking lot for Sternwheel festivities.
Police notified Dean Harris, Meigs Local’s bus supervisor, of the accident. He reportedly found Moore and the bus at the festival. The bus she was driving, according to the report, had front end damage with parts of the electric pole embedded in the bumper. Moore was transported by Harris to the Middleport Police Department where she was charged with failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident.
This was, it was reported, Young’s second accident with a school bus. Following the last accident, she was apparently released from driving a bus, but last Tuesday night at a meeting of the Meigs Local School Board, the agenda called for a “tabled motion from the Aug. 28 board meeting” to be brought back on the floor, and it was then unanimously voted to re-employ her on a continuing contract as recommended by the transportation supervisor. A report on her employment status with the district now, in view of Thursday’s accident and charges, was not available from a school official.
The bus will remain out of service until it can be repaired and pass inspection, it was reported.
