POMEROY — This week Pomeroy Village Council accepted the resignation of Councilman Shawn Arnott and then approved Dave Deem as his replacement.

Deem, who’d written a letter to council expressing an interest in Arnott’s seat was at this week’s council meeting as was Vickie Hanson who also expressed an interest. Council also received a letter of interest in the seat by Victor Young, III though he was not at the meeting.

Mayor John Musser suggested Deem for the empty seat and the nominee was approved with five yes votes. There was one abstaining vote from Mary McAngus who cited knowing all three candidates and wished not to vote. Arnott’s resignation is effective May 31 and his term ends on Dec. 31, 2011. At the last council meeting Arnott told council he wished to resign his seat due to planning to sell his home and move out of the village limits. Arnott also explained that he felt upcoming votes by the council would have an effect on the village after he moves outside its limits and believed citizens deserved an accountable vote on council.

Various council members and Musser said they had recently been to Beech Grove Cemetery to investigate the conditions and found them to be good. Musser said there was a problem with some workers taking flowers off of graves which they thought were old flowers but Musser said “that won’t happen again.” Clerk-Treasurer Kathy Hysell said the cemetery has been mowed three weeks in a row.

Hysell said the village had not received any hot mix yet because she hasn’t been able to get in touch with the vendor to get a price to write the purchase order. Council members reported several pot holes in the village, including on Pleasant Ridge and Union Avenue.

Council transferred $8,000 from the general fund to the street fund.

Council adjourned into executive session once to discuss property acquisition.

After adjourning back into regular session, council voted to retain Gary Simpson as a street department employee working downtown.

All members of council were present for the meeting as was Pomeroy Chief of Police Mark E. Proffitt.
