Rio Grande track duo post first place finish in season opener

BEXLEY, Ohio — Freshman Kyle Sanborn and sophomore Brittany Piccone both recorded first place finishes to highlight the University of Rio Grande track & field team’s performance in Saturday’s Purple & White Invite hosted by Capital University.

Sanborn enjoyed a memorable debut for the RedStorm by taking top honors in the men’s 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:41.06.

Piccone finished first in the women’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 13:06.68.

Rio Grande, which took just seven athletes to its indoor season opener, finished eighth in the 10-team women’s division and ninth among the 11 men’s squads.

In addition to Sanborn’s win in the men’s 1,000, Rio Grande was responsible for three others in the top seven. Freshmen Caleb Greer and Travis Flach were third and fourth, respectively, with times of 3:05.80 and 3:14.42, while freshman Andrew Lawrence was seventh with a time of 3:26.07.

Lawrence also tied for seventh in the high jump with an effort of 1.73m. He also placed 12th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.81, but didn’t qualify for the final, and was 28th in the shot put with a heave of 9.45m.

Sophomore Dustin Moritz took fourth place in the men’s mile run, finishing with a personal-best time of 4:41.63.

Also on the women’s side, sophomore Renee Davis was 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.63. She also placed 14th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.46, but did not qualify for the finals.

Rio Grande returns to action on January 12 in the Capital Challenge at Capital University.
