Point Pleasant edges Logan, 46-40

LOGAN, W.Va. — Free throws are a key component of closing games.

The Point Pleasant boys basketball team shot 16-of-21 from the free throw line in the fourth period to seal the 60-51 victory in Logan County.

The Big Blacks (7-9) were held to just seven points in the opening period, while the Wildcats (6-9) scored 12. The Red and Black rallied for a 13-to-9 run in the second period but still trailed 21-20 at the midway point.

Point Pleasant rallied for a 17 points in the third period while Logan scored seven. PPHS led by nine headed into the finale. Logan and Point Pleasant each scored 23 points in the final period and the Big Blacks claimed its second consecutive victories.

Dillon McCarty led PPHS with 22 points, 18 in the second half including 14 points from the free throw line. Alex Somerville had 18 points, Adam Slack added six, and Aden Yates marked four. Garrett Norris and Andrew Williamson each had three points, while both Wade Martin and Nate Chapman finished with two points.

PPHS shot 21-of-27 from the line for 77.8 percent, led by McCarty with a 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) performance.

The Wildcats were led by Zakery Miller with 14 points, followed by Trent Dalton and Brynden Street with 10 apiece.

LHS shot 5-of-10 from the free throw line for 50 percent.

The Big Blacks have now won six of their last seven games, while the Blue and Gold have lost three of their last four. Point Pleasant lost the first meeting with Logan by a count of 46-40 on January 12th in Mason County.
