BEREA, Ky. — The University of Rio Grande men’s cross country team was tabbed to finish second in the 2014 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll released Thursday.
The RedStorm garnered four first-place votes - more than any other team in the league - but totaled 53 points in the balloting of the league’s nine coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own squad.
Rio Grande, which will once again be under the director of veteran head coach Bob Willey, will open its schedule at home on September 27 when it hosts the annual Patty Forgey Invitational.
Indiana University-East grabbed three first place votes and 56 total points to edge Rio for the top spot in the poll, while Asbury University picked up one first-place nod and 49 points for third place.
Brescia University grabbed the final first-place vote and tallied 48 points for fourth place, while Point Park University rounded out the top five with 39. Indiana University-Kokomo (30) was sixth in the voting and was followed by Cincinnati Christian University (23), Carlow University (14) and Alice Lloyd College (12).
The 2014 cross country season will begin in late August and will conclude with the KIAC Championship on November 8th.
