POMEROY —The Meigs County Chamber of Commerce has hired Whitney Thoene, of Pomeroy, as its new executive director.

Thoene, who has a history of volunteer work in the community, comes to the chamber from Ohio University, where she was employed for the past year and half.

She is a graduate of Meigs High School, class of 2006; attended the University of Rio Grande, where she earned bachelor degrees in English and communication with an emphasis on public relations, and a minor in information technology in 2010. Two years later, she obtained a master’s from Marshall University in communication studies.

Thoene volunteers regularly at the Meigs Cooperative Parish. She has coordinated the school supply giveaways for the past four years, has helped with the children’s Bible story hour in the summers, and works with the youth at Syracuse Asbury United Methodist Church every Sunday.

“I am excited about becoming the executive director of the chamber,” Thoene said, adding that she plans to meet and speak with local business owners. “Increasing the chamber’s presence in the community is vital.”

She added that it is her hope the chamber will become a hub of networking and opportunities.

“I will know about events, sales and promotions, and be able to pass them along to the community at large,” she said.

She said the chamber will have monthly luncheons that feature a speaker or a particular topic.

The current big project, Thoene said, is the spring dinner, which features the theme “Friday Night Lights.” That will be 6 p.m. April 25. For more information, call 992-5005.
