CLAY TWP — Fire departments and first responders from across the region were called to a large-scale fire at a residence on Ohio 7 South between Gallipolis and Eureka at approximately 5 p.m. Friday. The fire completely leveled the two-story residence, as well as a Chevrolet Cavalier parked adjacent to the home. According the Gallipolis Fire Chief Keith Elliott, the structure was presumed to be unoccupied pending further investigation. No injuries had been reported as of Friday evening. The location of the residence at the end of a long, narrow driveway presented logistical challenges for responders since only one emergency vehicle could travel the lane at a time. Elliott said it was a “nightmare” trying to get the tankers carrying water to and from the residence since no hydrants were available in the area. Responders providing mutual aid to the Gallipolis Fire Department included the District 2 Fire Department, Harrison Township Fire Department and the Gallia County Sheriff's Office, who assisted with traffic control. Elliott said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and the case will be turned over to the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office.
