Southern to begin school Aug. 24


RACINE — Students in the Southern Local School District will return to the classroom on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Staff will report to the school at noon on Aug. 22, with open house to be held that evening from 4-7 p.m. Teachers will then have a work day on the Aug. 23, with students reporting for the first time on Aug. 24.

In addition to the open house, Preschool open house will be on Aug. 21 from 4-7 p.m., with kindergarten orientation at 6 p.m. on Aug. 21.

When students return to the school for the 2017-18 school year there will be some new faces in the classrooms and around the buildings.

New staff members include: Katye Manuel, high school Spanish; Jordan Pickens, high school history; Spencer Morgan, high school health and physical education; Katie Ash, high school math; Maria McClure, middle school intervention; Lindsay Thomas, third grade; Zack Kress, middle school science.

Assignment changes include Jennifer Roush moving to a second grade teaching position, Daniel Otto becoming grades 7-12 principal (was 9-12) and Tricia McNickle becoming grades Pre-K-6 principal (was Pre-K-3).

Bus Routes for the 2017-18 school year are as follows:

Bus 9, Charlie Lawrence —The morning route begins on Barringer Ridge, traveling all the way to the end; then Wells Run and back to Portland and Old Portland, to the Hot Spot; then turns left on Route 33 to the park and ride for pickups; the crosses over to Great Bend, all the way through; turn left onto Route 124 the right at the split, continuing on to Hoback Road; at the end of Hoback, turns right onto Tanners Run Road, continuing to the end and then left onto Tornado Road to the school.

Bus 15, Cheryl Smith — The morning route starts on the Sellers Ridge side off of Route124, going to the intersection and straight out Eaton Road; turns around at Dills goes back to the intersection turns left then turns right onto Grimm Road goes to the bottom of the hill and turns around goes back to the top of the hill turns left back onto Sellers Ridge; goes all the way to County Road 35; Continues onto the Lebanon Twp. garage turns right onto Ross Road and goes out Trouble Creek Road to the substation and turns around and goes back and turns right onto Ross Road; turns right and goes to Lovett Road past Adkins and turns around and goes back to Ross Road; turns right and goes to Adkins Garage on right and turns around to the left; goes back turns right onto Valleybell Road; goes all the way through turns right onto County Road 35; goes to Sharron Hollow Road, turn left and crosses both bridges, turns right onto Eaton Road, goes to the bottom of the hill and turns around, and goes back to County Road 35; turns left goes all the way to Route 33, turns right and goes to Eliziah Hill Road; turns around and goes back turns right back onto Route 33, then turn right onto Tornado Road; covers all the pick-ups to Hog Hollow Road then goes to the school.

Bus 7, Melissa Reedy — The morning route starts on Hill Road off of State Route 124; covers East Letart Road, Manual Road ,Blind Hollow Road, Apple Grove Dorcas Road to the bottom of Mile Hill Road, Waid Sayre Road, Stivers Road and Mile Hill Road; bottom of Mile Hill Road is the end of the route and then goes to the school,.

Bus 14, Kathy Miller — The morning route starts on Stiversville Road; turns left onto Durst Road goes to the end turns right onto Bald Knob Stiversville Road; goes all the way to the gravel pit in Portland and turns around goes to Brewer Road; then onto Smith Ridge Road; turns around at the district line; goes back to Bald Knob Stiversville Road; goes to Dewitt Road to district line and turns around; goes back and crosses over to Trouble Creek Road; turn around at Teaford’s driveway; goes back and turns left onto Bald Knob Stiversville Road and goes all the way to Bashan Road; turn left and goes to McKenzie Ridge Road; turns right onto Eliziah Hill Road; turn around at Ervin’s driveway goes back to McKenzie Ridge Road; turn right and go to the water tower and turn around; go back to Bashan Road and go to Greenwood Cemetery Road; go to the water tower and turn around and go back and turn right onto Bashan Road; continue to the end and turn right and go to the school.

Bus 1, James O’Brien — The morning route starts on Route 124, Letart, at the church by Theiss old farm; turns around there and goes all the way to Apple Grove Dorcas Road; turn right and go to the first long driveway and turn around and go back to Route 124; turn right and go to Buck Town; make the loop and get back onto Route 124; now go to Adams Road and turn around at the end of the road go back to Route 124; turn right and go all the way to Racine and turn right onto Yellow Bush Road; go all the way to the end and turn left onto Apple Grove Dorcas Road; all the pick-up on that stretch of road all the way to Tornado Road; turn left and do all the pick-up all the way to the school.

Bus 12-2, Wendell Ervin — The route will cover Carmel Road; then Horse Cave Road; onto Court Street; and then onto Morning Star Road (both side of it); turn right on to Bashan Road; go to Oak Grove and then to the school.

Bus 5, Jack Lyons — The morning route starts on Pine Grove Road all the way to Route 33; cross over to Vinegar Street; go to district line and turn around; goes back to Route 33 crossing over to Amberger Road and Yost Road; then goes to Forest Run Road to the district line; turns around and goes to WelchTown Road; go to Roue 124 Pomeroy; turn right and go to the red light park area; turn around turn right and pick up all the way to the Waters Edge Apartments in Syracuse; and then to the school.

Bus 6, Larry Smith — The morning route starts on Salser Road and goes out to Roy Jones Road; covers Snowball Hill Road all the way to Route 124, Syracuse; then right starts his pick up on Sixth Street, Community Center, and main drag in Syracuse to College Road; makes the loop back onto Route 124 and goes to the school.

Bus 10, Scott Hill — The morning route starts at the old Sun Fun in Racine; pickups all the way down to Syracuse; turn onto Fifth Street; pickup Sixth and Seventh streets; crosses over by fire station and makes the loop around that side of road and back onto Route 124; turns right and picks up all the way to Racine; makes the loop around Racine in town; then to the school.
