New Haven Council talks building permits

NEW HAVEN — Building permits and the associated building ordinance were topics at the most recent meeting of the New Haven town council.

Council members discussed projects that were being completed without permits being obtained. Some residents have been building outside the parameters of the building ordinance, which has minimum square footage required for a residence, as well as the type of foundation required.

It was noted that the homeowner is responsible for getting a permit for doing any work, or adding a building, fence, or room. The permit must be completed at town hall at least two weeks prior to any work being done.

The council read the resignations of Clyde and Elnora Weaver as members of the town’s planning and zoning commission. Volunteers are being sought to fill the positions. Those interested should call the town hall.

In other action, the council:

Issued a building permit to Joe King for siding and a deck;

Answered a question that the town does not own the land on Haven Heights where the water tank is located, but has a right-of-way;

Heard from councilman Matt Gregg that cameras ordered will be installed next week, and that radios have already been received and are being used;

Noted donations of both money and holiday items are being accepted for the Easter egg hunt, planned for April 8, noon, at the ball fields;

Terminated an employee who has been on suspension without pay since Feb. 2;

Agreed to reimburse John Fields for gravel placed on the roadway to the water tank; and,

Approved the minutes of the prior meeting, the financial report, and invoices for payment.

Attending were Mayor Jerry Spradling, Recorder Roberta Hysell, and councilmen Gregg, Grant Hysell, Matt Shell, George Gibbs, and Jim Elias.
