PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — No lack of offense here.
The Gallia Academy and Portsmouth football teams combined for 104 points and 955 yards of offense Friday night in a 55-49 Blue Devils victory in their Southeastern Ohio Athletic League opener on Gallia Street in Portsmouth.
The Blue Devils (5-2, 1-0 SEOAL) wasted little time getting on the board, as Wade Jarrell ran in a three yard touchdown at the 9:14 mark of the first quarter. Dylan Saunders added the extra point and GAHS led 7-0.
The Trojans (2-5, 0-2) answered with a 29 yard touchdown pass from Sky Oliver to Brandon Wedebrook with 4:21 minutes remaining in the first period. Zach DeLotell added the PAT and Portsmouth pulled even with the Blue and White.
Just one minute into the second period Logan Allison put GAHS back on top with a 17 yard touchdown scamper. PHS blocked the extra-point and GAHS led 13-7.
Portsmouth’s Oliver marked his second touchdown pass of the game at the 10:12 mark of the second canto with a 53 yard pass to Khalil Lattimore, but with GAHS blocked the extra point to keep the game tied at 13.
With 8:30 left in the half Allison found the endzone for the second time in the game with a nine yard run. Allison caught a two point conversion pass from Kole Carter and GAHS led 21-13.
For the third straight time the Trojans found an answer and this time it was Oliver with a five yard touchdown run for six points. Oliver also ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21 with 1:30 remaining in the half.
The Blue Devils were able to score once more in the first half, a Wade Jarrell four yard touchdown run with 19 second remaining in the first half. Saunders kicked the extra point home to put GAHS on top 28-21 at halftime.
At the 7:33 mark of the third period Portsmouth defensive back Johnnie Charles intercepted Wade Jarrell’s pass and took it back for the score. DeLotell added the extra point to again tie the score.
Wade Jarrell made up for the pick-six 11 seconds into the fourth period when he hit Allison for the 11 yard score. Saunders added the extra point and GAHS led 35-28.
For the fifth time the Trojans were right on time with their answer, Oliver running in the four yard touchdown and DeLotell added the extra point to tie the game.
The Blue Devils were back on top at the 7:24 mark of the fourth with a 10 yard TD run by Wade Jarrell. Saunders extra point put the GAHS ahead 42-35 and for the first time in the game PHS was unable to answer. A 37 yard touchdown pass from Wade Jarrell to Reid Eastman at the 5:57 mark, put GAHS by two scores, 48-35.
The Trojans were down but not out and they pulled within six points at the 4:51 mark when Oliver found Lattimore for the 13 yard touchdown and DeLotell added the extra point.
With 2:17 remaining in the game Wade Jarrell ran 61 yards to the house, and with the Saunders extra point, put the Blue Devils up 55-42.
Oliver and the Trojans answered with a minute remaining in the game when he hit Charles with the 15 yard touchdown pass and with DeLotell’s extra point, pulled within six points. The Blue Devils held on to take the 55-49 victory.
Wade Jarrell led the Blue Devils yet again, throwing for 279 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-31 passing with a interception and rushing for rushing for 190 yards on 22 carries with four scores.
Eric Ward had 45 yards on seven carries for the Blue Devils, Logan Allison ran five times for 40 yards and two scores, Wes Jarrell ran twice for 14 yards, Eli Miller ran once for one yard.
Wes Jarrell led the GAHS receiving core with 91 yards on four catches, followed by Reid Eastman with four catches for 85 yards and a TD. Logan Allison had 65 yards and a score on seven carries, Seth Adkinks had one 28 yard catch, Kole Cater had one 12 yard catch and Dylan Saunders had one catch that was stopped for negative-two yards.
Brian Williams and Eli Miller each had a sack for GAHS, while Blake Wilson intercapted a pass. Wes Jarrell led the defense with six solo tackles and two for a loss.
Sky Oliver is to the Trojans what Wade Jarrell is to GAHS, as Oliver threw for 254 yards and four scores on 18-of-29 passing with an interception, while leading PHS with 63 rushing yards and two scores on 23 attempts.
Johnnie Charles had 12 carries for 61 yards, and Austin Hollins had two carries for eight yards.
Brandon Wedebrook had 69 yards and a score on three receptions, Khalil Lattimore had two catches, both for scores and 66 total yards. Isiah Lisath caugh seven passes for 65 yards, Alex Dickerson had three grabs for 41 yards, Charles caught two passes for 15 yards, while Hollins had one catch for minus-two yards.
The Blue Devils have now defeated Portsmouth four straight times including two staight times in PHS.
Gallia Academy will host 2-5 Warren next Friday for homecoming at Memorial Field in Gallipolis, the Trojans travel to Jackson to take on the 3-4 Ironmen.
